SIU notified after officer-involved shooting

The Windsor Police Service has notified the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) following an officer-involved shooting this evening.

Shortly after 6 p.m., officers responded to a report of a robbery in the 3200 block of Sandwich Street. The suspect was soon tracked to the area of Rankin Avenue and Wyandotte Street West, where officers located a man who was armed with a knife. During the encounter, the suspect was shot by police. 

The suspect has been transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Rankin Avenue remains closed to public access between Wyandotte Street West and University Avenue. 

As the SIU is expected to invoke its mandate and assume carriage of the investigation, the Windsor Police Service is unable to provide further information.
