To mitigate the challenges facing sexual assault survivors, Windsor Police Service accepts online reports of sexual violence (including historical incidents). 


Online Reporting Eligibility


Please note the following when reporting online:

  • The report must be filed by the victim, parent / guardian, or authorized designate.
  • The reporting person must have a valid email address.
  • The reporting person must be 16 years or older (at the time of the report).

You should not file an online report if:

  • You are in immediate danger.
  • You are injured or require medical attention.
  • The incident has just occurred, or the suspect is nearby.
  • There is physical evidence (e.g. blood, saliva, semen) that should be preserved.
  • Your email inbox is shared or not secured.

If any of the above circumstances apply:

  • Phone 9-1-1 to report emergency situations.
  • Phone 519-258-6111 or attend Windsor Police Headquarters to report non-emergency situations.


What Happens After Filing a Report


After filing your report, you will receive a temporary case number and printable police report. You will also receive a permanent case number after investigators review your submission.

All reports are reviewed within seven days. Upon review, you will be contacted by a specially-trained sexual assault investigator.

What is sexual assault?
Sexual assault is any unwanted sexual touching. It includes kissing, hugging, molestation, rape, and attempted rape. It can happen once, more than once, and even over many years.


Do I need DNA evidence to report a sexual assault?
No. Physical evidence is not required to report a sexual assault.


What if the assault happened a long time ago?
There is no statute of limitations on sexual assault. You can report at any time.


Can I file a report if the incident occurred outside of Windsor or Amherstburg?
Yes. Windsor Police will process your and notify the proper jurisdiction. Police in that jurisdiction can then contact Windsor Police for assistance in continuing the investigation.


What information do I need to share in my report?
Only a brief description is required. The investigator will gather complete details at a later date.


If I change my mind after filing my report, do I have to continue with the investigation?
No. In some domestic cases the investigator is obligated by law to press charges; otherwise, you decide whether you want to proceed. You can also choose to proceed at a later date and have police re-open the case.
